George III Country House Armorial Hall Chair | peacocks-finest
top of page

An elegant late George III period country house hall chair in mahogany, in wonderfully original untouched condition,

Having an elaborately painted armorial device adorning the oval back, over a dished trapezoidal seat, raised on slender square cut legs terminating in collared feet,

English or Irish, circa 1790.

Unlike other types of seat furniture, hall chairs were not originally intended to being used and mainly served for a decorative purpose, that is, to display the family crest or coat of arms, elaborately emblazoned onto their backs. This often allows to track their provenance with a certain degree of accuracy, however, in this particular case, the family who commissioned this chair and the house where it was supplied, are yet to be revealed.
