English, c. 1780.

Why we like it

The refined proportions and beautifully patinated original colour of this elegant chest of drawers make it a rare find these days. The feet, unusually, are raised on little 'toes', which lend this chest some extra elegance and make it visually 'floating'. Superb quality, beautifully figured veneers, gloriously patinated surface throughout, original handles.

The laminated feet, the panelled back and the red wash, together with the overall superb quality of construction of the present chest are the signature features of Thomas Chippendale's workshop. Thomas Chippendale.

Such simple and practical pieces intended for everyday use and 'done in a neat but not an expensive manner', to the same high quality standards as the more sophisticated examples, consisted a significant part of Thomas Chippendale's oeuvre.
