A fine antique late 18th century George III period English country house three-seater sofa settee, in fine Honduras mahogany, covered in traditional Colefax and Fowler floral chintz fabric

English, c. 1790.

The flat back flanked by the downswept padded arms with reeded and scrolled mahogany terminals, resting on turned and tapering columns, over the generously proportioned square seat with loose traditionally upholstered cushion, covered in Colefax and Fowler 'Roses and Pansies' chintz cotton, the whole raised on four ring-turned tapering fore legs terminating in original brass capped castors and four boldly raked back sabre legs, also retaining the original 18th century castors. The showframe is made of quality Honduras mahogany and displays wonderful warm colour and rich patina.

Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler have been regarded as Britain's most influential interior decorators, since the firm was founded in the 1930s. It is the longest established interior decorating firm in Great Britain, as well as one of the most respected. The two famous decorators popularized the traditional English country house look and feel to their interiors, and the present piece is the epitome of their celebrated taste, being a fine quality, generously proportioned 18th century example, covered in the quintessentially English chintz, so popular in the Georgian country houses.

Fine antique condition, superb colour and patination to the showframe.
