Pair of Antique Grand Tour Bronze Table Lamps | peacocks-finest
top of page

A very decorative pair of antique bronze urns mounted as table lamps,

France or Italy, early 19th century.

Why we like them

We love Klismos chairs, and these wonderfully chic lamps are decorated with very fine applied figures of classical Greek youths seated on this type of chairs. Inspired by ancient ceramics, often decorated with the depictions of figures on Klismos chairs, this pair of lamps is the ultimate classicist's dream. Superb quality of castings, grand proportions, beautiful patina with occasional dents and cracks.

Interest of the European collectors to classical antiquity was fuelled by the excavations at Herculaneum (1738) and Pompeii (1748).

The crater, a large vase originally used to mix water and wine, here has  a purely decorative function. With their sides decorated with reliefs of figures sitting on klismoï, these vases illustrate the taste of the great European collectors, culminated in the construction of the Villa Kérylos in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Côte d'Azur, in 1908.
