A particularly elegant English George III - early Regency period sofa table of faded mahogany, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster and London,

circa 1800.

Why we like it

The mahogany has faded over time to a splendid mellow colour and has acquired a rich patina. Very few pieces from that period have survived to these days in such remarkably untouched original condition, and this rare survivor not only possesses originality but also grace and style. This versatile occasional table is perfectly proportioned to make a functional centre or side table; very useful at the foot of your bed or at the back of a sofa.

A table of very closely related design and decorative detailing was supplied by Gillows of Oxford Street in 1803 to Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall, illustrated Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, p. 264, pl. 268. A drawing dated 1801, for a mahogany sofa table made by Gillows exists in the Westminster Archive Centre (Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, p. 265, pl. 269).

Beautifully detailed throughout, exquisitely figured flame mahogany veneers and fine stringing, original patinated brass knob handles.

Sleepy country house condition, pleasingly faded colour, glorious patination.
