A fine late Regency - George IV period adjustable telescopic reading table or music stand in rosewood, in the style of Gillows of Lancaster and London

English, c. 1825

The rectangular tilting and adjustable top with rounded corners and removable book support, above the extending reeded and twisted column of the telescopic action, with brass fittings, raised on a tripod base with sabre legs terminating in bobbin turned feet.

The style and fine quality of the present piece are typical of the Gillows' firm. Wonderfully versatile piece which could have been used as a table or torchere stand at a different height, as well as a support for sheet music or as a fire screen when fully tilted up.

Fine antique condition, the column has a restored historic split.
