19th Century Bronze Etruscan Candelabrum | peacocks-finest

An exquisitely cast and patinated bronze 'Etruscan' candelabrum in the Grand Tour taste.

France or Italy, mid- to late 19th century.

Why we like it

We love the finest quality of casting and patination on this superb candelabrum. The top part, surmounted by an exquisite figure of ibis, is superbly cast as ancient Roman oil lamp, with candle sconces in the nozzles, and it is supported by a very finely cast tripod stand, raised on three lion paws and embellished with anthemia.

Design

This design derives from standard oil lamps and torcheres that were used for lighting and ceremonial purposes in ancient Greece and Rome, the original examples found at excavations at Pompeii or Herculaneum and currently at the Naples Archeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli). These designs were adapted for candles in the 18th and 19th centuries and were produced by the best foundries across Europe - from Chiurazzi in Italy to Barbedienne in France.
