Un port à Martigues

A very fine watercolour on paper, mounted and framed in gilt frame, signed 'A.Mathis' (lower right).

Martigues is often referred to as 'Venise de Provence' with its colourful houses sitting shoulder-to-shoulder along the boat-lined canals giving the island part of the town a touch of Venice feel. Adolphe Mathis, a Monegasque native, genuinely loved South of France and created a wonderful series of finest watercolours celebrating the early 20th century beauty of the glorious Côte d'Azur.

Provenance: Christie's, London, 5 December 2002, Lot 78
