A charming mottled-blue glazed Crown Staffordshire porcelain box in the chinoiserie style
England, circa 1900–1920.
Why we like it
The deep, mottled ‘powder blue’ colour of this charming box, decorated with exotic Oriental designs in gold, is reminiscent of the Chinese porcelain of the Kangxi reign (1662–1722).
Favoured at the Qing court (1644–1911) on account of their Ming imperial connotations, glazes in cobalt blue were also a popular item of export.
Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe.
