Stamped 'NW' to the underside.

Embellished with exquisitely carved scrolls and anthemions, these chairs relate to a set of hall chairs at Benthall Hall, Shropshire, by Gillows of Lancaster and London. Like the present chairs, they are stamped 'NW', several of them also impressed 'Gillows'. Though the design of the backs is different, the seat, seat rails and legs are identical and typical of Gillows, as is the type of mahogany used. There are further known examples of similarly stamped chairs but the identity of the journeyman who made them for Gillows is unknown.

It is a particularly fine and rare design, executed in the finest solid Spanish mahogany.

These super smart chairs will be a very chic addition to a classic, eclectic or modern interior.
